Goldman Sachs paid professional golfer Patrick Cantlay more than $1 million annually in a sponsorship deal linked to the bank's consumer-banking efforts, CNBC has learned. He got paid significantly more when Goldman renewed his sponsorship in a one year extension earlier in 2023, this person said. Cantlay has earned more than $42 million in official competitions since turning pro in 2012, according to the PGA Tour. Goldman spokesman Tony Fratto declined to comment on the financial aspects of the sponsorship, as did Cantlay's representative Molly Levinson. Cantlay still appears on Goldman's website as a brand ambassador, along with LGPA golfer Nelly Korda and McLaren's Formula 1 racing team.

What the Israel-Hamas war means for defense stocks

New York CNN —When war breaks out, defense companies tend to make money. That means aerospace and defense stocks tend to rise during geopolitical unrest. Defense stocks typically rise after military conflicts but soon lose those gains. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the iShares defense ETF surged by 5%, with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman’s shares jumping about 20%. Goldman Sachs announced third-quarter results on Tuesday morning, reporting earnings of $5.47 per share, which beat the $5.31 expected by analysts.

Goldman Sachs chief executive (and noted party DJ) David Solomon will no longer perform at high-profile events, picking Wall Street over South Beach, a representative from the second-largest investment bank confirmed to CNN. Solomon, who performed under the alias DJ D-Sol, began spinning tracks at festivals and in night clubs a few years ago. “David [Solomon] doesn’t work to play diplomat,” Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, who runs Yale School of Management’s Chief Executive Leadership Institute, recently told CNN. And while shares of Goldman Sachs (GS) may be down by more than 8.4% this year, they’re still up by about 40% since he took over in 2018. Goldman Sachs partners are leaving — some 202 during David Solomon's five years as CEO by Insider's calculation. In particular, before Solomon, Goldman nurtured many fiefs and then spread the wealth from the most successful ones across the firm. Of the former Goldman executives that Insider interviewed, here are the most cited reasons they gave for leaving Goldman. When both men struggled, senior partners left, and Goldman stumbled in its efforts to wind down its balance-sheet investments. Goldman Sachs partners are paid well by any standard: $950,000 in base salary and often multiples of that in annual bonuses.

US Senator Warren questions Goldman's role in SVB failure
  + stars: | 2023-06-30 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Senator Elizabeth Warren has questioned Goldman Sachs' (GS.N) role in the failure of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and the profits it allegedly made in the process. The letter said Goldman Sachs benefited further as market turmoil following SVB's failure increased the value of the discounted bond portfolio by an estimated $100 million. Goldman acquired a bond portfolio on which SVB booked a $1.8 billion loss, a transaction that preceded a failed share sale by the lender for which the Wall Street bank was an underwriter. But it's well known that banks don't collect fees when capital raises are canceled," said Tony Fratto, a spokesman for Goldman Sachs. He reiterated that Goldman expects proceeds from the SVB portfolio sale to be closer to $50 million, and not $100 million.

What the heck is going on at Goldman Sachs

It's been non-stop negativity over at Goldman Sachs recently. The bad news just keeps rolling in over at Goldman Sachs. The Economist put a fine point on this earlier this year when it ran a cover story titled "The humbling of Goldman Sachs." But Goldman Sachs' historic partnership model has given it a distinct culture, where these kinds of things matter. Whatever the truth is, it's clear that Goldman Sachs and David Solomon are going to remain in the headlines for some time.

Ex-Goldman Sachs partner Adam Dell shared a sexually explicit video by mistake, Bloomberg reported. Dell paid a multimillion-dollar settlement to the coworker who saw the video, Bloomberg reported. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon was among top execs who looked into the complaint, Bloomberg said. She ultimately settled for less, but Adam Dell, 53, still paid a "multimillion-dollar" settlement, Bloomberg said, citing people familiar with the matter. Adam Dell, who founded the investing platform Domain Money, did not respond to Insider's emailed requests for comment on Thursday.

Goldman Sachs partners are restless. While Goldman says the turnover has not been unusual, more than 85 partners have left the firm since Solomon became CEO in 2018. Now, AnnaMaria Andriotis of The Wall Street Journal has detailed more of the tensions inside Goldman.

"The Board fully supports the use of the Goldman Sachs planes for travel, just as it supported the use of private aircraft by previous Goldman Sachs executives," said Tony Fratto, a company spokesman. "Executives at Goldman Sachs have been flying on private aircrafts for decades as it is proven to be the most secure, effective, and cost-efficient solution to meet the extensive travel obligations for CEOs of firms like Goldman Sachs — which is why all of our peer institutions also extensively use private aircraft." John Waldron, president of Goldman Sachs Reuters/Brendan McDermidOccasionally, Solomon and Waldron switch planes, particularly when Waldron flies overseas. Goldman Sachs has a sponsorship deal with pro golfer Patrick Cantlay. "These estimates wildly overstate the cost of such flights to Goldman Sachs and are not an accurate representation," he said.
Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon owns shares in a luxury real-estate developer, according to the NYT. David Solomon, the chief executive of Goldman Sachs, is known to fly to the Bahamas, where he has a home. The valuation the bankers gave for Discovery Land fell well short of $1 billion, and Goldman did not win that deal. Discovery Land eventually sold $300 million of shares without the help of any bank in early 2021. Insider has previously reported that at least a small number of Goldman Sachs partners and other insiders have complained about Solomon's personal jet use, as well as his side gig as a DJ.
Goldman Sachs had an option to buy a third Gulfstream when it bought two in 2019. Goldman Sachs has decided to scrap a plan to buy a third corporate jet for the company's use, a move that follows scrutiny of the CEO's plane use and a companywide plan to review expenses. The decision means that the company won't exercise an option it received in 2019, when it purchased two other Gulfstream jets: a G280 and a G650ER. Goldman also received an option to purchase a third jet, according to people briefed on the arrangement. Both of Goldman's planes feature simple paint jobs of thin blue and gray stripes running from nose to tail.
That's because many of the decisions Solomon made over the next four years — along with aspects of the firm's hard-charging, ego-driven culture — ultimately led to the collapse of Goldman's consumer ambitions, according to a dozen people with knowledge of the matter. Goldman executives were eager to seal the deal with the tech giant, which happened before Solomon became CEO, they added. The rapid growth of the card, which was launched in 2019, is one reason the consumer division saw mounting financial losses. Within months, Ismail left Goldman, sending shock waves through the consumer division and deeply angering Solomon. Goldman should plow some of those volatile earnings into more durable consumer banking revenues, the thinking went.
"It's a pretty important investor day," said Mike Cronin, investor director at fund manager abrdn, which owns a stake in the bank. In 2020, Solomon kicked off Goldman's inaugural investor day by telling participants they should feel free to "break into open applause." A deal could broaden Goldman's revenue beyond trading and investment banking, which can be buffeted by economic cycles. The investor day is also an opportunity for the company to address questions around Solomon's leadership after bad press, Mayo said. But several presenters from the 2020 investor day have since left.
A decline in morale at the Wall Street firm concerns some Goldman partners. Here are their concerns about CEO David Solomon, who addressed the partners in Miami. CEO David Solomon addressed Goldman Sachs' partners today at the firm's annual partners meeting in Miami. There's little history for Goldman partners taking their concerns directly to the board. Since then, according to someone who has spoken to investors, more shareholders have questioned how long Solomon can last as Goldman's CEO.

REUTERS/Denis BalibouseNEW YORK, Jan 27 (Reuters) - To listen to Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) chief executive David Solomon, the bank is doing "great," while skeptical investors wonder what comes next. Still, Goldman shares are up 3.6% over the past year, outperforming the S&P 500 banking index and peers. In October, Goldman scaled back ambitions for Marcus by placing it under the newly-merged asset and wealth division. "Going back to what has made Goldman great for decades will allow the firm to reset and recover," he said.
Here's what axed workers can expect to get in pay, benefits, and help finding a new job. In the days since Goldman Sachs axed as much as 6% of its workforce, more details are emerging about who got cut and what the bank is paying in severance. The bulk of the layoffs took place in the Americas, or close to 1,500, this person said, citing internal data. Many laid-off Goldman Sachs workers will remain on the payroll for months before they get severance, according to correspondence seen by Insider. Goldman Sachs declined to comment on the details of severance and the geographic breakdown of the layoffs.

The Wall Street titan's rivals have also started to cut jobs as global banks prepare for recession and broader, deeper cuts are expected across the industry if deal-making activity remains weak. The long-expected jobs cull at Goldman follows a recruitment drive during the pandemic, which saw the bank's total headcount top 49,000. Johnson, who was with Goldman Sachs for more than six years, declined to comment. Oliveira said some bankers who have reached out to recruiters like him are considering ditching investment banking for other positions.
"Every 10 minutes, I just kept hearing that someone was being let go," one employee said. Goldman, which reports fourth-quarter earnings next week, has had the added problem of having lost billions on its nascent consumer banking experiment. "We've just been hearing that today was doomsday and that we'd start hearing cuts this morning. Every 10 minutes, I just kept hearing that someone was being let go," this person said. Consumer banking associateGoldman Sachs' spokesman Tony Fratto said: "We know this is a difficult time for people leaving the firm.
Some are pointing the finger at CEO David Solomon and his spending on the consumer banking business. "Out of control" spendingGoldman insiders are also still fuming over spending on Goldman's consumer business, and there are fears this resentment could escalate with next month's earnings. The consumer bank includes Marcus, a digital banking platform that offers high-yield savings accounts, and the Apple credit card. It was key to Solomon's plan to diversify the company away from its core investment banking business. Goldman pulled back on its consumer banking ambitions earlier this year amid questions about how much cash was being burned on the strategy, led by Stephanie Cohen.
